Alas, another differentiator between man and other, "lesser" animals is being debunked: Humans apparently aren't alone when it comes to whipping out the metaphorical wallet to pay for some booty. A study published in the December issue of Animal Behavior and referenced in Time suggests long-tailed macaque monkeys exhibit a version of hooking, governed by supply and demand, primate style.
Female macaques barter sex for grooming from males. If the johns of the jungle spend sufficient time picking pesky nits from the backs of monkey-ho’s, they get to off together to some secluded monkey parking lot and have monkey sex.
In what the authors refer to as biological market theory, the time males spend grooming decreases when the number of available females increases. Hmm. Maybe that's two more differentiators ... .
